Grants for Entrepreneurs: Unused Resources for Your Company

“The distance between insanity and genius is measured only by success.” — Bruce Feirstein

Let’s face it: your love of paperwork wasn’t the reason you founded this company. You started it because you had the hubris to think you could create something out of thin air, a vision that kept you up at three in the morning (3.00 am), and a fire in your gut.

But then reality sets in—the “dry spells” in the bank account, the exorbitant credit card interest rates, and the persistent sense that the dream is about to come to an end. You’ve considered getting a loan, but the idea of taking on additional debt feels like a stone around your neck.

I’d want to inform you about the door you haven’t yet knocked on: grants.

It’s Fuel, Not “Free Money”

Grants are sometimes referred to as “free money”; however, that term is inaccurate. It disregards the hard equity you have already put into your foundation. A grant is an investment in your influence rather than a gift. You don’t repay it like you would a loan. You don’t give away your stock, unlike venture funding. A grant is a validation. The world is saying, “We believe your solution is so important to our community, our economy, or our future that we want to help you scale it.”

Where to find the Gold

There is a vast ecosystem of cash waiting for someone just like you; you only need to know which rock to flip over. You may believe that grants are exclusively available to nonprofits or scientists wearing lab coats, but you are mistaken.

Types of Grants and Reasons for Existence

Grant Type—Government (SBIR/STTR)

The government aims to keep any technological invention, no matter how small, domestic.

Grant Type—Niche-Specific

If you are a rural founder, a woman of color, or a veteran, there are pots of money set aside especially for your viewpoint.

Grant Type—Corporate Grants

Big businesses like FedEx, Amazon, and Visa wish to help the entrepreneurs so as to improve their reputation and the economy.

Grant Type—Local Society

“Economic Development” funding is frequently available in your state or city, and they encourage you to recruit locals and remain in the area.

“I’m Not Good Enough”—the emotional barrier.

I understand. You’re thinking that your business is too little, your “story” isn’t polished enough, or you’re not “techy” enough, and you’re looking at these apps and feeling that old buddy, Impostor Syndrome, creeping in.

Stop.

The goal of grant makers is to find meaning rather than perfection. They are interested in learning about the person whose life is improved by your goods. The grit in your eyes is what they want to see. Don’t just offer them spreadsheets when you develop that application. Tell them “Why.” Tell them about the day you were on the verge of quitting and why you decided against it.

How to Get Started Without Going Crazy

1. Go to Grants.gov or hunt up your local Small Business Administration (SBA) office instead of searching for “Free Grants” on Google, which will only lead to scammers.

2. Create a “Grant Toolkit” by organizing your business plan, tax IDs, and a 500-word “mission statement” into a single folder. For these reasons, hopping through hoops feels more like a sprint than a marathon.

3. Think Small to Go Big: A $5,000 local grant can cover your rent for three months and provide you some much-needed breathing room. Don’t just chase the $100,000 national grants.

Your Vision Is What You Owe It

You’ve started, which is the hardest part. You accepted the risk. Now, don’t allow your light to go out due to a lack of funds. Money designated for someone with your drive is currently sitting in accounts.

It’s a scavenger hunt, not a lottery. You have all you need to succeed.
